Another Seed Order

This time from Heirloom Seeds. I started this order with Park Seed Co., but the shipping was $9.99 for regular speed. This charge on an order a little or $20, seemed high to me - it’s a light package, seeds . . . so as much as I like Park Seed Co., went w/ Heirloom Seeds, shipping only $3.50.

My order below.

Have had great success with my basil seeds. Some parsley shoots. A couple succulents, but they’re dying now that I’ve transplanted from the ‘bio-.

Using the Park seed starting trays did not seem to give my seeds a greater head start, and transplanting didn’t work well, so will now go w/ direct seeding in to the garden and pots and will see how that goes. Got a couple small, cute pots at Gardens, a store in Dallas, that started out of Austin. Nice shop.

A post w/ good landscaping ideas that I like at The Brick House blog.

There’s a definite leaning toward more modern landscape design.

Composting

The new compost bin that I ordered from gardeners.com arrived this week, it’s the smaller one on the left (I got the old one about eight years ago as a composting promotional giveaway from the city). I moved the toppings from my old compost pile in to the new bin,

Nothing fancy, sturdy, and easy to put together, no nails or hammer or screwdrivers needed, the corners are held together by these metal twirls,

I twizzled it together, then dug a little in to my old compost bin, and . . . that’s some fine looking rot I have there,

Before & After Back Yard

From hgtv.com,

Before: The homeowner wants to create a garden getaway, and she’s even rescued some unwanted bluestone with which to create a patio, but she needs help with the design and hardscaping necessary to pull this yard together.

After: This artful design creates an English cottage garden and effectively doubles the living space. The bluestone pavers form the foundation of a new patio, then alternate with bricks to create a meandering path to the back wall, where a simple pergola shades a bench.

Patio Solar Lighting

Solar string lights. Do they exist? Googled, and, yes they do. At my local Target store. So easy.

This set is 11′ long, $49. About right to string across the outer patio cover edge. Product description says the lights last for about 8 hours. So, probably, at least 4-6 hours, until after midnight (spring, summer, fall)?

A more unusual solar lighting option is this 4×4x6.5″ (10 x 10 x 16 cm) Moon Jar, found at Charles & Marie ($44), described on their site as follows,

Have it sit in the sun during the day and see it radiate at night. All made possible by modern technology – some LED’s, a solar panel and some ingenious thinking. . .

This is a wonderful effect and the sandblasted glass makes it glow in an eerie shade of blue. It is a great little idea for a dinner table, where you have the jars scattered around the table, or an evening at the beach where they will provide just the right amount of light, or as garden illumination, just position them at strategic points in your garden or rooftop terrace or balcony – they work equally well in either location.

Ran across Plow & Hearth’s nylon solar lanterns ($19.99 ea.), though I prefer plain white lights best, I think these c/b a a fun option for entertaining & parties,
